Creating trained consumer activists

Consumer activist — a course-based training on consumer rights and the practical law connected with them, for social workers and students of law.

For consumer justice, not just emotion — factual and evidence-based preparation.

Background and need

Why trained consumer activists are needed

Despite the Consumer Protection Act, 2019 coming into force, the ordinary consumer remains unaware of their rights, the complaint process and the legal remedies available.

  • 1Consumer fraud is risingCases of consumer fraud are increasing in India, and complaints relating to digital services and e-commerce have grown rapidly.
  • 2Rural and weaker sections are deprivedRural and weaker sections remain deprived of legal assistance.
  • 3Most do not know where or how to complainThey fear the complexity and cost of legal processes, or are not financially able to pursue them.

In this situation, trained consumer activists are urgently needed at the grassroots — people who, as consumer activists, will speak out against exploitation in society and protect consumer rights.
